What some parents do

As we all know last night there was a snow/ice storm that hit the city of Philadelphia. Unfortunately in my neighborhood there many homes and schools that lost electricity, so why is it that even with a 2 hr delay parents were still trying to send their children to school? The thing that bothers me with this situation is 1) schools were already delayed so the students wouldn't even be there for too long and 2) what kind of parents would leave their child in a building with no electricity or heat? Are things really that bad at some of these homes where parents cannot deal with their children? What makes this situation worse is that many parents rely on schools and teachers to raise their children, so if there is no school then they are in a jam. But how desperate can a parent be for heaven's sake its 30 something degrees outside and there is no electricity in the entire building.
I don't even understand why the school district just did not close the school for the day. What difference would it have made if these students missed another day of class. Obviously the students cannot learn anything and it makes it more of a hassle for the teachers who have to be stuck with these children. The sad part is that no matter how you look at the situation, these parents still left their children and for what nothing but a couple of hrs off of mommy/daddy duty. However, some of these parents may have had no other choice but to leave their child maybe because of work or other circumstances. But on the other hand some of these parents are so lazy and ignorant that it may not have even bothered them leaving their children. For the lazy and ignorant parents, they should really be ashamed of themselves. Not only do I think that this is ridiculous but I consider this neglect and child endangerment. Leave to me I would charge all of these parents just because of their careless actions.

  1. I think even when the weather is SLIGHTLY bad, school should be cancelled.
